HP deskjet printer installation

Asked by James Fitzpatrick

I have an HP Deskjet F340 printer combo, USB connection . I've been trying to install it, using the general instructions given in Ubuntu help. It seems to be recognized, but I can't print anything. I've tried printing a test page, and a document with Open Office. Nothing happens. The printer is listed at sourceforge.net and I've tried downloading HPLIP from that site, but it won't install because "gedit has not been able to detect the character coding." What can I do? Or, what am I doing wrong?

Have you seen https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HpPrinterInstallationAndMaintenanceDapper

Which printer model did you select when installing through the add printer wizard?

If you load a piece of paper, press and hold the Cancel button and then press the Start Copy Color button, what is the result?

I tried both the HP Deskjet 340 and 340C. It's
currently installed as the 340C. I've also tried it
as an HP Deskjet 1000 series. I've tried typing
something with the Open Office word processing
program, but it just doesn't print.
I did what you suggested and a regular test page
prints. The printer works fine, and I've been using
it on my Windows hard drive.

Have you tried the F300?

I don't see an F300 in the list in step 2. In step 1,
the printer is recognized as an F340. When I go to
step 2, it's highlighted as a Deskjet 1000. I tried
that, but i get the same results. I've also tried the
New Deskjet Series, with the same results - nothing.

I bet it has to do with the version of Ubuntu that you are using, it shows up in the latest version 6.10. What version of Ubuntu are you using?

That might be it. I think I'm running 6.06, but when
I check the update manager, it says my system is up to
date. I've been download all the software updates.
How can i tell what version I'm using, and how can i
get the latest version?

To definitively find out what version you are on, do this:-

Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal
lsb_release -a

It will tell you next to "Release" what the version number is.

To upgrade Ubuntu see this page:-
