Firefox 3.5.7 not performing properly in Ubuntu 9.10

Asked by Scunnered

Since loading Ubuntu 9.10 Firefox has been performing extremely poorly. I have posted on the Ubuntu forum without too much luck and in my last post it was suggested that I direct my problem via Launchpad.

I keep getting intermittent errors particularly when I attempt to either visit www.bbc.co.uk (my home page) or listen to BBC radio output in the United Kingdom. For example this morning when I closed down the Ubuntu forum in Opera and attempted to open my home page in Ubuntu I was informed that the server was not found. It took 5 attempts before my home page would open each time offering the same error. This is not isolated to the BBC as Firefox appears to show no favour as it happens often with other pages also.

Earlier in the week I attempted to listen to BBC Radio 4 about 0800 hours only to be informed that Radio 4 was not available. This was a totally inaccurate statement as I immediately switched browser (Opera) and listened to the BBC output.

No matter how many updates have been provided for 9.10 the performance of Firefox has been dismal.

I hope that you will be able to have something done to rectify matters

Clean firefox mozilla profile

Close all opened Firefox and try to delete your Firefox user setting open a terminal from applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
mv .mozilla .mozilla_old
and restart Firefox.

If you have a lot of bookmarks please export them before move your setting directory, then import them again from saved file into Firefox.
Also take note of your installed Firefox extensions, to reinstall them.

if this works then delete the .mozilla_old directory, from terminal, type:
rm -fr .mozilla_old

hope this helps

Maximize your terminal window or you will get a warning; then run it, type:
