ubuntu firefox doesn't work for me

Asked by Leslie Naylor

I have installed ubuntu 5.10 on a new IBM laptop R50e.
Everything works correctly except for internet access.

I can ping www.yahoo.com and all my other computers.

I can send and receive e-mail using Evolution Mail.

But when I try to use Firefox, the only site I can get to is firefox.

I don't know where to start looking for firefox's settings, as there is no Options under the firefox tools.

I am using Firefox sucessfully on a Windows machine, but can't get it to work on the dual-booted version of ubuntu.
Both machines were loaded with ubuntu from the same DVD

Hi Leslie,

try to open Edit --> Settings --> Connections, perhaps there you will find something useful.

Good luck,
Michael

If you go to Edit -> Preferences, you will find a connection settings button in the window that appears here you can edit any proxy settings firefox may need. (thats where it lives on version 1.5 should be similar in the version of firefox your using)
But as far as i can remember/see that is the only network setting you can change there and all other internet related settings ubuntu manages and can be changed from the System -> Administration -> Networking utility.

If you can ping the yahoo website I would imagine those settings are correct though. Can you use the update manager and synaptic ok on the pc? (to find and install packages from the internet)

There are other browsers you can try if everything else looks to be working ok, but I hope you can get firefox working.

Best wishes,
Daniel

P.S. Your not working in offline mode are you? (in the File menu) I know it's an obvious thing but asking as I've been caught out by obvious things numerous times myself.

You can also try disabling IPv6 for Firefox

in the address bar type - about:config

and press return

In the Filter field type - ipv6

toggle the value of 'network.dns.disableIPv6' to true

I was having the same problem, and that worked for me. Just for curiosity, what does that mean?

Not sure what you're asking here Troglodite but it means that you have stopped Firefox from using the IPv6 protocol when connecting to the net

more on IPv6 here

Can you help with this problem?
