Java applet problem (uploading Photo album to facebook)

Asked by Lachlan Summer

I am running Ubuntu 9.04 and am trying to upload a photo album to Facebook using its own applet, which says it requires Java.

I used add/remove programs to install several Java programs, but it now tries to load the applet and completely wrecks the Firefox session, so that it will not do anything, including exit the program.

When I search 'Java' in add/ remove programs its says I have installed:

Sun Java 6 Runtime
Archive Manager
OpenJDK Java 6 Web Start
Open JDK Java 6 Runtime
Ubuntu restricted extra's
Sun java 6.0 Plugin
Icetea Java Plugin

I thought perhaps there was a conflict between the free and non free Runtimes, but if I try to uninstall the free one it says I can't because it has dependancies.

Any help with this problem greatly appreciated. My wife is very frustrated when not able to upload photo's easily to facebook!

It works for me with sun-java6-jre and sun-java6-plugin installed. It can be a little slow to start but works well eventually. I'd remove the others java alternatives to avoid confliction.

If it's any consolation, it infuriated my wife too.

Can you help with this problem?
