Firefox wont shut down

Asked by swift240

Hi all,
Using Ubuntu 9.04 with all updates.
Every single time I run Firefox, no matter how long its been used when I attempt to shut it down it wont.
I am forced to use the force Firefox to quit option.

This is getting really annoying, is there any answere to this problem?
Firefox V3.013

TIA,

Mike.

Try to upgrade to version 3.5.2 from http://www.mozilla.com. This bulid will not be officially connected to Ubuntu, i.e. there will be no updates from Ubuntu repositories, but Firefox will get all the packages required from official Firefox website.

HI :)

Please can you open Firefox from a terminal
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal#Starting%20a%20Terminal
Simply type in

firefox

then without opening any websites or anything (apart from the homepage you have selected as your default when it starts-up) just try the normal way of trying to close firefox and see if you get any output in the terminal window to give us a clue about what's happening.

Then in another terminal (while firefox is still running) try typing

ps aux | grep firefox

hopefully you should only get 2 lines about firefox. One will be the "ps aux" command and the other will be the firefox console. Note the number at the start of the firefox line and use the numbers instead of xxxx's in this line

kill xxxx

which i guess you have been using previously? or have you managed to put an applet on the top taskbar or something? Anyway see if the first terminal has any output now that firefox has been forced closed. Anything?

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

There is no need to use terminal. Just extract all contents to /home/[your name]/firefox , so you don't accidentally delete your Firefox. Then, create a link to /home/[your name]/firefox/firefox on your desktop. Your could change an icon for whatever you want. That's it!

Ok I tried that I got this:-

 17405 0.0 0.0 3340 812 pts/0 S+ 19:41 0:00 grep firefox

However if I use the menu top left and choose Quit it closes as it
should but if I choose the red X top right then I get the problem.
But saying that it never used to do that by choosing the red X at top right.

Ohhhhh this is making me look a lia, I done the ps aux | grep firefox as
you said now its closing properly.

Lol, sometimes this sort of thing does happen. Don't worry. The main thing is that it is working now :)))
