Broken site using Firefox and Opera - Ubuntu 9.04

Asked by J (Jay) ferreira Jr.

Hi there,

I'm not sure if I should report this as a bug, in any case I will post here first

I'm putting together a website and it displays properly using all the major browsers such as Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari and even with IE 6, 7 and 8 in Windows XP and Windows 7.

However when I display the same site using both, Firefox 3.0.10 and Opera 9.64 build 2480, in in Ubuntu the two forms I've in the site at this moment look horrible and they are in fact displaying outside the boundaries of the page.

Here are the pages:

http://www.agfseguros.com/contact/index.php

and

http://www.agfseguros.com/quotes/index.php

To see the form in the second page you actually need to click on the "Seguro de Vida" link.

I've tried a few different things such as changing the div size from 100% to 90% and also to 640px to no avail. As you can see the other elements in the site are viewed properly, except for these two forms.

I'm very concerned about this issue since Ubuntu is a popular distro in Brazil where the audience of the Webpage is located.

Can anyone please point me in the right direction?

Thank you very much.

Hello, jfjunior. :-)

Hmm.. Have you tried IE4Linux? Try that, and see if the Internet Explorer browser in Linux also displays it as such.

Also, just adding that in my opinion the site looks very good, and professional. The forms don't look bad, and seems a pretty minor issue, and I don't think anyone will chastise you for having the forms go away from the border of the page a whole pixel and a half.

I hope that this can get us on the right track, and I hope I can think of a proper solution.

Best to you, and good luck.

Hi Bryan,

No, I've not tested in IE on Ubuntu. Simply because most people that use Linux does not bother to load IE. Besides I think it will fail anyway as it looks like the problem is really the OS and not the browser at this point. I may be wrong...

Thanks for the comments about the site. I don't know about the forms though. I would love to see the site ok in all environments. I may end up putting a note in the site alerting the users. But it will hurt because I hate to be putting up a site that is not compatible with all the browsers and main OSes out there.

If I find a solution I will post it here for sure.

Thanks

To call it incompatible is a bit harsh, I think. Would you like me to post a screenshot of how I see it, to see if it differs from what you see?

Yes Brian, please do. Can you let me know what is version of your OS and the browser you are using? I've posted a few views of my side how I see it in different OSes here: http://www.jfjunior.ca/webpageviews.zip

I only got half page screen shot in my Ubuntu 9.04 machine, but you can see the difference right there. In the Windows box, because I have a better screen capture tool, I could get the whole page screen shots.

The other two screen shots were obtained at this page: http://browsershots.org/ where you can submit a page to see how it will look in a variety of environment and browsers.

Thank you.

jfjunior, I'm very sorry, but with my upgrade to Firefox 3.5 (Developer Beta), the page looks as you originally described.

I will continue to try to think of possible solutions, but I'm not sure there is one beyond that.

Best to you, and good luck.

Can you help with this problem?
