Upgrade via Update manager failed
Binary package hint: firefox
1. Release: 7.04
2. When I try to check the package name in Synaptic, all I get is "Could not download all repository indexes", so I'm not sure about the release (I am pretty new to Ubuntu and Linux)
3, 4. I have had some crashes lately, so I want to upgrade to 7.10 or higher from 7.04. When I try tu update via Update manager, it fails and I am prompted to report this as a bug and to include the files in "/var/log/dist", which in my case is "/var/log/

Indeed, you seem to have Ubuntu 7.04 installed. It reached its end of life in October 2008, so the software repositories have been moved to a different place. To continue with upgrade, you need to correct your sources.list file. To do this, start a terminal (Apllications -> Accessories -> Terminal) and enter:
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/
An editor window will open. Throughout this file, release archive.ubuntu.com with old-releases.

Sorry, a typo: you should _replace_ archive.ubuntu.com with old-releases.

Id say just back up your data and do a fresh install of a newer version of ubuntu.
It would be a lot easier and it will save you some time.
7.04 is already obsolete and 7.10 is now obsolete also.
So if you upgrade to 8.10 or 9.04 (when it comes out) you will get all the bug fixes and newer software.

Yeah, I want to install 8.04 LTS, but I've read that it's recommended to
go through all the releases, one after the other instead of jumping to
the latest... Thanks , Allan

Yes, the safest way is to do an incremental upgrade, first to 7.10, then to 8.04.
The suggestion Ilya gave is part of the solution, but it will fail, since it is not complete. Please follow these instructions here closely, the important part besides modifying your sources.list (and adding the debian-installer line) is step #6 described there.

Still not working. You mentioned "adding the debian-installer line". How is this done?

It is described in the link I gave you. The line is part of the stuff you need to add to your sources.list, as described there. Be sure to follow the instructions precisely, or you may run into trouble.
You should also do this upgrade before April 18th, because then 7.10/Gutsy will become an "old" release as well, and things might change.

OK, I saw the line in the sources.list, thanks. I must still be doing something wrong, the Update manager still haven't enough repositories for the upgrade.
Never again will I work with unsupported releases.. I will try some more before giving up and instead install 8.10 from scratch. But then I will have to worry about loosing data when I have to do the partitioning..

OK, in that case we will do the upgrade manually, without the update manager, to figure out where the problem is. Make sure you added all 6 lines starting with "deb" and "deb-src" as shown in the link first.
====> Note that you also need to comment out all other "deb" and "deb-src" lines! Just add a '#' in front of every line that doesn't already have one, except for the 6 lines you just added to the file.
Then open a terminal (Appilcations-
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get --fix-missing install
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
After that your system should be up to date, but still 7.04. But it will be ready to upgrade to 7.10 at this point. Use this command:
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Did that, but Update Manager still misses a lot of repositories and the upgrade cannot be completed.l Q:should I still replace archive.ubuntu.com with old-releases.

I must have messed up my sources.list. Is it possible to start all over and create one from scratch?

Hm, for some reason the entries in your sources.list you posted already referred to Gutsy, which is 7.10...
But if it worked now and the problem is solved, it's fine.
The sources.list.d ist just a directory for additional, external repositories, it's quite OK if it is empty.

Thanks for your input and support, I'm running 8.04 now, everything works fine. I will upgrade to 8.10 and later 9.04 when possible/stable

Glad it worked out!
If you upgrade to 8.10 or 9.04, it is best to upgrade your system about twice a year (which is the release cycle), so you won't run into the problem of upgrading from unsupported systems anymore.
If you stick with 8.04, which is a Long Term Support release, you don't *need* to upgrade until April 2011, but the advantages of regular updates are newer software versions of all applications etc.
