problem with citicards.com login page

Asked by bulld80

I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 with Firefox 3.0.8. When I open citicards.com, the page displays correctly. However, I cannot click with the mouse to put focus on the User ID or Password fields to login. In fact, the entire top section of the website seems unresponsive to mouse events. The links at the bottom seem to respond to mouse events.
The workaround I'm using right now is to keyboard TAB into the User ID and Password fields to login. However, it would be nice to be able to click it :) Is this a bug in firefox or a bug in the citicards page itself? I haven't noticed this behaviour on other webpages. Pls let me know if more information is needed, and how to obtain that info.
Thanks, -shez-

Sometimes problems like this can fixed by clearing the cache that firefox builds so it has local copies of web-pages to speed up the browsing process.

Edit -> Preferences then select Advanced (the rightmost option).

then select the "Network" tab, and in the "Offline Storage" section click on "Clear Now".

I had no problems selecting the fields with Firefox 3.0.8 using the mouse.

Thanks Andy -- I tried clearing the cache as you mentioned, but the problem still happens. Is there anything else I can try, or is there anybody else out there able to reproduce the problem? Thanks again, -shez-

Forget it! Citi does not support Firefox or Linux (AT ALL).
If you do not have a machine with Internet Explorer I had some luck accessing my Citi account with Konqueror. Try it...but give it up with Mozilla Firefox.
good luck

Thanks clombard, but I'm not interested in a workaround. I thought the issue may have just been something funky with my desktop, but I recently bought a new laptop and I can reproduce this same issue on my laptop with a fresh install of Jaunty. I did notice though that if you click on the entry field before the page completely loads, the focus works properly. But if you wait until the page is fully loaded, then the focus doesn't work.

I do believe that ubuntu+firefox should be as usable internet explorer, even for bad websites, so I would really like to have this working. At the very least, I would like to know whether this is:

a) citicards.com not adhering to web standards, or
b) firefox implemented some web feature incorrectly

If (a), please provide some details about what citicards.com is doing wrong, so that I can pursue this with them directly.

Thanks!

update: I also have adobe-flashplayer installed, and the problem seems to happen only after the flash widget on the side has loaded. If I *right* click on the login field, I get the Flash menu. So it seems like the Flash widget is occupying the entire screen space, and capturing all mouse events in that area, even though its displayed contents is just the area to the side of the login widgets

An easy workaround is to use the user agent switcher plugin for Firefox. I believe that there is an Ubuntu package for it. Set it to IE, and citicards.com will work fine.

Can you help with this problem?
