Being unable to get access to a terminal is very bad indeed.

Is anything else wrong, normally when things start going wrong one after the other, it is a very bad sign

There are no other hints of trouble, so far. I CAN get into the
emergency terminal shown on the log-in screen. (Session) In this
*terminal* it shows: gateway@gateway: "$. Typing In,"pwd" generates
"/home/gateway" And another line: "gateway@gateway1"$"

If you use the key-combination ctrl+alt+F1 (or F2...F6) you can get a Full-screen terminal if you can't access a commandline terminal from the menu anymore. ctrl+alt+F7 gets you back to the graphical desktop.

I hope this helps.
