your router has an IP address on your network. Typically 192.168.0.1.

Ping is a test to see if it can find it through the network. It is done by typing ping 192.168.0.1

To put a browser in online mode hit file, then uncheck the checkbox at the bottom that says work offline.

If you can ping the router, and can ping your dns, it should be just that checkbox

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

ifconfig

that will tell you your ip address

also give us the output of:

lshw -C network

so we can know which network adaptor your using

also the output of iwconfig wouldnt hurt either.

127.0.0.1 is the internal internet address. This address is used to check the network of your computer. Please ping the 127.0.0.1. Does it response. One question, did you check you network manager is install or not?

127.0.0.1 is the loopback address. thats not your computer's ip address. try following my instructions again:

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

ifconfig

that will tell you your ip address

also give us the output of:

lshw -C network

so we can know which network adaptor your using

also the output of iwconfig wouldnt hurt either. Please copy and paste the results here.

if you dont give us the output of the commands, we cannot continue troubleshooting your problem. you can save the contents of the output to a text file, and using a thumbdrive, external hard disk, cdrom, etc you can move it back to the computer with internet access so we can assist you.

Okay first thing: You told me to use that ifconfig command to find out my IP Address and the only numbers I got were the numbers for the internal internet address. So I don't know what else you want me to do?

I tried "pinging" 127.0.0.1. and it didn't do anything.

I don't know ANYTHING you're saying. I don't understand everything about computers and I came to you for help, but I'm even more confused than I was before.

So PLEASE, in normal english, explain what I need to do.

calm down and read my instructions. step by step. open a terminal window as i described. then type the command:

lshw -C network

a bunch of information will be displayed. you need to copy paste that information here. now type a new command:

ifconfig

then again for iwconfig. for example your follow up post should contain the results of the commands you typed in the terminal. something like this:

Few things you should probably know, were all just Ubuntu users trying to help, not a paid support service.

If you want to see what were looking at and maybe find another person that had a similar problem that has been sorted already check out launchpad, the software everything you give us goes into. Your particular query is here: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+question/58101

From the information you have given it looks like somehow your wireless has been disabled. That is why iwconfig did not give an output.

Im using a slightly more recent version, but if you right click the network icon in the panel at the top right does it show a checkbox for wireless and networking? If so, are the both checked?

We will keep trying to help, but we tend to have to fit this around our work, and our families.

You can also find a very large amount of support at the ubuntu forums: http://ubuntuforums.org

does your laptop have an on/off toggle switch for the wifi adaptor? sometimes its on the front or side of laptop a physical switch you can turn on or off, on some laptops its a key combination like Fn-F10 or something to enable/disable the wifi radio. perhaps you accidentally turned your wifi off?

ifconfig isnt showing your wifi adaptor at all. it would be labeled wlan0. it would really help us help you if you typed in a terminal:

lshw -C network

that l is a lowercase L. i guess its short for list hardware. the -C tells it we're looking for a specific class of hardware and that of course is the network variable at the end. remember its dash C with no space in between. it will definately work if you type it correctly.

Hi saxon,

Please check the cable of your computer. Currently, it does not connect to any router or gateway. Further, check your network hardware as well.

Thanks,
Thien

b saxon,

i understand your wifi is not working, for troubleshooting purposes connect an ethernet cable from your router/cablemodem to the ethernet port on your dell mini. then ubuntu will have access to the internet and you can copy/paste the commands we gave you so there are no typos. also it will enable you to paste the results back here for us to help you further.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask b saxon for more information if necessary.
