First try to open the Firefox menu: "File" and uncheck the "Work Offline" item

Then if you are still in trouble or this issue appear to you when you restart the Firefox browser and if you are using Ubuntu 8.10 i think is related to network-manager applet...

We can get you instruction to install it replacing the network-manager... simply please ask

Hope this helps

For a mini 9 I would recommend updating to 8.10, almost all the problems for the mini 9 with 8.04 were fixed.

firefox isn't related to be on line or not...

Please tell me... are you connected via ethernet cable to a router... or have you an usb modem...?
Please describe something more about your equipment...

In the past was you able to get your Ubuntu be connected to net...?

Thank you
