I can brows only to goole web sites (including Gmail, Picasa) - new install
I just installed Ubuntu today and the only web sites I can access are google's web sites: google (can search), Gmail (can read mail), Picasa (can view pictures) but any other site - timeout.
From the terminal I can't ping any web site - I can see it resolves to name to IP address. If i'm typing wget http://
I'm tried both static IP address and DHCP.
On the same coputer, I'm running WinXP and it works fine.
Any ideas what the problem is ?
Thanks.

Thanks for your question
Wich version of ubuntu have you installed ???
Can you post the content of /etc/resolv.conf after the internet connection ???
Thanks
| incanus (tals) said : | #2 |
The version is 7.04.
here is the /etc/resolve.con:
search type address
nameserver 194.90.1.5
nameserver 212.143.212.143
both IPs are the IPs I configured in my DHCP server.
I just notices, that for some site, I can see the page title and also I can see the site's icon in the address bar.
I can access www.cisco.com, www.ibm.com and others.

The problem is the first name sarver 194.90.1.5
Change the content of this file like this:
nameserver 208.67.222.222
nameserver 208.67.220.220
Thanks.
P.S. Do you use a router or usb modem ???
| incanus (tals) said : | #4 |
194.90.1.5 is my ISP's dns server.
I'm using a router.
there is a very strange phenomena: sometimes, after I reboot the system, I can brows some sites, some times I can set only the text without images ,sometime everything is ok.
From the terminal, I can access FTP sites (by name) and download files...
I will try to change the nameservers and update (do I need to chmod the resolve.conf to 777 and edit it ?) or do I edit the network settings and update the DNS settings ?
Thanks for the help.

If you are using a router you can cahnge the dns name in the rouer, not in resolf.conf. These dns are the openDNS: http://
I had your problem 3 months ago, my isp had some problems with its DNS servers. I changed the data with the openDNS name, after I done it I was able to use vell the net.
Thanks

I tried all the three options:
1. Change the settings in the DHCP configuration in my router
2. Edit the resolve.conf
3. Edit the DNS settings in the network settings.
After each change I rebooted my system and nothing helped..
I think its a problem of your isp.. (i hope you don't have TELE2...)
It's strange that you can browse the web from windows... are you sure?
I had the same behavior some time ago (i connect to internet trough a router, with tele2 italia) : google was fine but no other site...
I've resolved changing my connection type from the web configuration page of my router:
From PPOA to PPOE LLC.

Hello Incanus, I have exactly the same problem of you. Have you found a solution ?
I can only browse GOOGLE sites. Almost all others I receive time out errors. Some sites (hotmail.com) are partially loaded but after 25% it hangs.
On the same machine I have windows installed, working perfectly. The IP address, default gateway and DNS are the same of the windows OS, those provided by my ISP.
On Ubuntu 7.04, I can ping all the sites, including using their names, not only their IP addresses.
When I use wget, i can fetch google sites, but other ones are incompleted and fails.
Any help are greatly appreciated.

I cannot believe someone else have the same exact problem. At first I thought I can only browse to google site but since incanus mentioned ibm and cisco site worked, I tried them and it really works. Like incanus, I also run winXP (dual boot) from the same computer and it works fine.
Anybody can help us resolve this problem?

Hi
I have installed ubuntu a few days back and having the same problem. I connect to the network via DHCP. I can't load "heavier" sites (for example with some images) in ubuntu while everything works fine in windows. I tried using wget but even that also partially downloads the site. I have tried disabling ipv6 both in firefox and via /etc/modprobe.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
