How do run this file and install it in bubutu 6.06

Asked by BobRafalovich

I have downloaded a printer driver file for my HPPhotosmart printer.
The file is hplip-1.7.4a.run.
It is supposed to be self extracting and installing but when I click on it I get the following message:
Could not open the file /home/bob/Desktop/hplip-1.7.4a.run.
gedit has not been able to detect the character coding.
Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file.
Select a character coding from the menu and try again.

Any suggestion?

Hi,

Note that HPLIP is already installed on your system, albeit an older version. In fact you may not need to run this file to get your printer working. Try this first:
- Find and download a PPD file for your printer.
- Start adding a new printer and once it reaches the step of choosing a driver, click the "Install Driver..." button to load the PPD file.

For completeness here is an actual answer to your question but please try the above first:
- open a Terminal
- run the command 'sh /home/bob/Desktop/hplip-1.7.4a.run'
- if it complains that it needs to be run as root/superuser then run the cmmand again with "sudo " as the first word.

Cheers, Dave.
