Printer Installation problem

Asked by Alan Wirth

My problem is the same as Harry Chestnut's. I am trying to install a new printer but I still can't work out what to do when I am confronted by "Select a PPD file".
I also could not find a LINUX driver for my Canon i470D printer although the printer installation process seemed to detect the printer and correctly identified it.
Can anyone please try to guide this new Ubuntu user thru the process? - I an not fluent in Linux-ese.

Here's something what might help you with your problem.

I appreciate your response but I could not follow the instructions. I could not find a driver.tar.gz and did not understand how to install ghostscript or whether I needed to. I'm confused.

It seems all I need to do is install the driver for the Canon BJC800 but how do I find this driver from the "Select a ppd File" panel at stage 3 of "install Driver" instruction?

I thought so. :)
click bjc-800 -> Click Generate PPD file -> download it to desktop
On desktop -> system -> administration -> printing
when choose the driver for the printer you can see select a ppd file, click it Then you choose the ppd-file from your desktop.

I think I spoke too soon. Although it prints nicely etc the print size is about 1/4 of an A4 page. Tried both "shrink to fit" and "100%" options and result was same.
Maybe BJC 800 driver not a good choice?

If the test page printed out nicely, what was what didn't?

Test page printed out about 1/4 page size too - I thought/hoped that must have been right. Then printed out The Japanese Fruit Grower and that was 1/4 page size as well. And it's Evolution I'm trying to install rather than Eudora.

BTW you don't have to install Evolution, it's right next to firefox...
Since it's prints ok. Are sure the paper size is set to A4 and the paper type is plain paper?

Re: i470D printer - settings are all OK margins default tried everything I think - still prints 1/4 page. Re: Evolution - sorry should have said configure - no hassles there.

Does the output with bjc800 driver appear scaled to 1/4 of the page or does it print only 1/4 of the page?
Try changing the resolution: System -> Administration -> Printing, right-click your Printer, select Properties, change Resolution.

I tried altering the res to 180 and to 720 without any change to the end
result. The page is scaled down to 120 X 170mm. Thanks for trying.

Here's what you do:
Edit the bjc-800 ppd-file
Find the following line
*DefaultResolution: 360x360dpi
change the resolution to 600x600dpi

In step two you have to click Install Driver... then you navigate to
your Desktop choose the ppd you downloaded click Open. After that click
Next. Name the printer eg. i560
click apply.

I installed Wine and Pagemaker, and printed one page. Worked fine a month ago. (I had duel boot) Now,100% Ubuntu, with Pagemaker installed on Wine, different computer, It does not recognize the printer. I have tried the regular rigamarole and when I get to new, Printer and Class are greyed out.
I keep away from terminals. It is Brother HL 2040 printer. Thanks
Pepe
