Edgy to Feisty upgrade failed. Trouble with superblocks

Asked by Charly Julienne

I upgraded Edgy to Feisty using the update manager, seemed fine (took 2 hours, but i had time). Now when I boot ubuntu, it shows the loader bar, but then text appears on the screen:
Code:

 * Checking file systems
fsck 1.40-WIP (14-Nov-2006)
fsck.ext3 No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/hda4
/dev/hda4
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really does contain an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
    e2fsck -b 8193 <device>

fsck died with exit status 0
[fail]
* file system check failed
A log has been saved in /var/log/fsck/checkfs if that location is writable.
(or type Control-D to continue):el and resume system boot

I think I remember mounting /dev/hda4 to my /home directory.
Anyway when I press Control-D, the screen goes black. I then press Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get to a prompt. It tells me it cant finds /Home so its using the root directory. when I ls /Home, nothign is there!
Help please!

Use a live cd to enter in your hard disk. Mount the root direcotory of ubuntu hard disk in mnt directory, to this when you are in live cd open a shell and do: mount /dev/hdaX /mnt - where /dev/hdax is your ubuntu root. After open nautilus and go to the /mnt. If all is correct you can see the direcotry present in your h.d. Edit the file /etc/fstab and post it.
