no the jre and jdk are quite small.
What your computer is trying to do is install an upgrade.

It looks like you machine requires a lot of updates. First I would go into System-> Administration-> Software-> Sources. You should enable the universe and multiverse repositories, also uncheck the CD-roms.

To clear out the old packages and update

sudo apt-get clean all
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get clean all
sudo apt-get autoremove

Then install java

sudo apt-get install sun-java6-bin sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin

Hope this helps

Can I do that when i am using the live version? Because i can download the program, but something is wrong with my computer i think. Every time i download the program it tells me to restart the computer to finish the instalation, but every time i try, it shuts down most of the way, to the point that the cd ejects and the screen turns black. but thats as far as it goes. When i restart manually I think it does not save because it tells me that it needs the cd to boot, so I put it back in, then it wants to start all over with the download and I don't know why. can you help me with that?

No the live version runs off the computers ram and the Cd drive.
So you cant keep any information when the computer is shut down.

I believe that using the LiveCD limits you to a small amount of storage space. You may not be able to upgrade and install all these components during a LiveCD session. Obviously anything which requires a reboot will wipe that off anyway.

To see how much space is available. Open a terminal and type

df / -h

You may want to consider actually installing ubuntu in a dual boot configuration

Its the amount of ram thats the limit of your storage

how do you perform a dual boot?

Oh ok that won't work for me because when i tried to install Ubuntu the first time it erased my previous OS. so this means I'm screwed now right?should have stuck with windows XP. Or is there anything else I can try?
