unable to access url addresses in firefox

Asked by tony

I'm a rank newbie and have just successfully installed Ubuntu 5.10. During my first session I also downloaded the latest updates to this distro and I am online submitting this request for help. Although my dsl router has obviously been recognized I am unable to get firefox to accept a url address. Help will be greatly appreciated.

What (doesn't) happen when you type an address (e.g.
www.google.com

Does it come back with an error message about how it can't find the host?

What happens if you try and go to 64.233.167.99? (the number is also google's address)? The same sort of errors?

If you're feeling adventurous go to System -> Administration -> Network Tools, click on the tab that says Ping, type in 64.233.167.99 and click the Ping button at the right. If you get this far then again, tell us what happens.

I am having the same problem it sounds like. After entering an address it just times out. I pinged 64.233.167.99 and it came back okay with no packets lost. Where to now?

I've found the fix - please follow the following instructions:

1.) open browser
2.) type into url line "about:config"
3.) find ipv6 by typing "ipv6" into filter line.
4.) toggle the setting of ipv6 by right clicking on the line.
5.) refresh and reopen browser.

Can you help with this problem?
