tried to install printer driver and nwo cant install any other software in ubuntu

 this is the error message i get - am using 6.10 edgy Eft - was trying to install brother mfc drivers downloaded from their website using the gnome package installer:

E: The package mfc4800lpr needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.
E: Internal error opening cache (1). Please report.

i have tried to remove the package and to reinstall, but cannot get beyond this error message.

Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks

Run

    sudo dpkg --configure -a

on a terminal

 I get this message after running the info above. it asked for my password and then I received this message:
status database area is locked by another process

Now it won't run this info at all .

I'm trying to re-install a brother printer driver but removing all of the first install is required. That's where this problem originated.
