News about Firefox 2.0 backport to Dapper, anyone?

Asked by Myriam Schweingruber

Just filed bug #89704:
As Firefox 1.5 security updates cease at the end of March, could we at least get some news about the backport of Firefox 2.0 to Dapper, please? People are getting worried seriously, so no news is not seen as good news right now.
Please communicate!!!

As you can see from bug #68158, backporting Firefox is not so trivial and requires a lot of libraries to be backported.

I'm not sure what the official position from the devs is however it seems like backporting ffx will be a difficult task. Dapper is supposed to be supported for 3 years on the desktop so there will have to be some solution devised to keep it secure and up to date. If it's possible I would consider an upgrade to Feisty (7.04), otherwise you'll just have to wait for the forthcoming (I'm guessing) solution.

I realize that porting Firefox 2.0 to Dapper isnt easy. But, I see no compelling reason other than a Firefox upgrade to move to Feisty. Dapper support was promised until 2009 on the desktop, its a long term release. As such users were promised that Dapper would be patched as needed. A lot of people are relying on Dapper working and being updated. The browser in it is now at end of life. The support from Mozilla ended today, April 24, 2007. This is a major security concern.
This is especially a problem for people running the amd64 version. In the 32bit version it is trivial to get the 32bit binaries from Mozilla, rename the /usr/lib/firefox directory and put Firefox 2.0 in its place. Not so in the AMD64 version. There is no 64bit version available from Mozilla. You also cant replace the 64bit browser with a 32bit one without affecting other things.

I found a solution in a open source project named Swiftweasel. http://sourceforge.net/projects/swiftweasel It is an optimized version of Firefox 2. It has AMD64 and i386 packages that install and work on Dapper.

Can you help with this problem?
