firefox shows no connection

Asked by jameswatkins

I find that 1 in 5 times when I start firefox I get the message no connection. At that time all ADSL computer systems ok and it works with windows. In answer to a previous question I received following advise:
Try to delete .mozilla directory -- it's hidden directory in your home folder (to see it press Ctrl+H or View→Show hidden files). This directory contains all firefox preferences etc. (warning: by deleting this folder you'll loose your bookmarks, saved passwords, history...).

I was unable to do this...pressing Ctrl + H only caused screen to flash in firefox and the view menu did not have Show hidden files as an option.

Is there any reason why firefox is so inconsistent and can anything be done to fix it?

In your home folder, not the firefox window.

BY home folder do you mean startup screen?
I have found that if I launch Windows first then ubuntu then firefox loads correctly. But if I launch ubuntu first it never loads ie I get the cannot connect message.
My system ubuntu was launched from the cd using it as boot cd ie I did NOT create ubuntu via wubu.
In fact when loaded first firefox nor the emailcan access my ADSL unit. If I try to access the ADSL Netcomm box through firefox it still shows cannot connect.
I have even tried to do this through terminal using the sudo commands as suggested by another person.
How can I get firefox in ubuntu to access the ADSL unit WITHOUT USING WINDOWS?

I did locate home and the relevant files. Would deleting all these really achieve anything ie explain why firefox is ok after following windows but not ok if launched first?

I am now trying a different approach with another question so I am marking this as solved to avoid repetition.
