Encryption should be in force but Firefox message says otherwise

Asked by Craig Hill

On the Encryption tab of Edit/Preferences/Advanced the boxes for SSL 3.0 and TLS 1.0 are checked (both of them). However, when I go to log in to my email account maintained by my ISP I get the following message:

"The information you have entered is to be sent over an unencrypted connection and could easily be read by a third party."

Do I have encryption or not? If I do, why the message saying otherwise? If not, how do I get it?

My Firefox version is: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.8.1.6) Gecko/20071008 Ubuntu/7.10 (gutsy) Firefox/2.0.0.6

The settings in Firefox only enable the features; a website must actually implement https (and be listening on port 443, and have SSL set up on the server) for information to be transferred securely. Your webmail apparently doesn't use secure connections. By the way, you can see that on launchpad.net all connections are secure- just look at the lock icon in the bottom right of the Firefox window! If you need secure email, try https://mail.google.com
