Video's will not play in youtube

Asked by raven

After reviewing some of the questions above it seems that there is no way to use firefox to play many of the video formats that I encounter on the web. Someone suggested installing a different browser than firefox that will do this, does anyone have some suggestions as to what the best choice would be and where to get it. I finally realized that I am missing so much of the web now because so much more content is in the form of video's. Thanks Bryan

Did you install Flash in order to play videos in You Tube?

Also if you want to play videos on Firefox then you can use Mplayer, Totem or VLC to do that.

MPlayer plugin for Firefox:-
sudo apt-get install mozilla-mplayer

Totem plugin for Firefox:-
sudo apt-get install totem-mozilla

VLC plugin for Firefox:-
sudo apt-get install mozilla-plugin-vlc

If you want to try another web browser other than Firefox, then you could give Opera a try.

If you are using the most recent version of firefox, when you visit a page where flash is required, you will recieve a message asking you whether you want to install it.

If you would like to install flash, along with support for mp3 format and a variety of other things, you could always install the 'ubuntu restricted extras' package from Aptitude

OK, I've tried pretty much everything, Tyrer, but when I visit a youtube page in Firefox (3.0.1) I do not get the install message. I have installed flashplayer 9, then flashplayer 10 from the Adobe site - still no joy. The rectangular 'placeholder' for the video content does not even display.

Tried apt -get install mozilla-plugin-vlc - same deal.

Same deal in Opera.

But, in Kazehakaze, no problem.

Baffled, me - anyone got any clues? TIA.

Please

Clean firefox mozilla profile

Close all opened Firefox and try to delete your Firefox user setting open a terminal from applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
mv .mozilla .mozilla_old
and restart Firefox.

If you have a lot of bookmarks please export them before move your setting directory, then import them again from saved file into Firefox.
Also take note of your installed Firefox extensions, to reinstall them.

if this works then delete the .mozilla_old directory, from terminal, type:
rm -fr .mozilla_old

hope this helps

I struggled with this for days.

Finally found that I had Flashblock set to on.

Go to Tools \ Add-ons \ Extensions \ Flashblock \ Preferences and
ensure that it is not set to On.

Hope this helps
