Firefox Release Candidate not in Repositories

Asked by ANDREA

The Firefox 3 Release Candidate seems to be out since last week (end of last week, to be precise) but it's not in the repositories yet. it apparently fixes a lot of issues ubuntu users have experienced so it might be a good idea to include it in the repositories ... could it be added, please?

thank you for your replies in advance!

Hi. Thanks for reporting this bug.
Fortunately, it is not a bug and has been converted into a question.

The Firefox 3 RC package is not currently available as most of the Ubuntu-mozilla team is at the Ubuntu Developer Summit. Thanks for your patience.

it is kind of both, a question and a bug but thank you anyway for your reply! the summit explains the delay, thanks :-)

it seems silly to update the beta package to the release candidate, then from the release candiate to potentially another release candidate, it seems the most sensible approach would be to wait for stable release then update to that.

Thank you for your reply, Matt. What seems silly to me is to have a buggy version in the repos when a better one is available. FF3b5 works on no computer I know of (that means >10); I have switched to opera personally. why? because ff3b5 doesn't work. but ok if it seems less silly to you to keep a buggy version in the repos while a better one is available then i'll just have to replace firefox with the rc myself ...

i personally prefer rui boon's explanation. given that the final version will be out in late june i don't think it would be totally crazy ("silly") to update the verison though. we'll just have to see what happens after the summit :-)

If you install the rc form the mozilla site and remove the ubuntu version you'll lose the link that makes sure it's updated from ubuntu and will always have to update when security fixes are released, consequently if there are any issues between firefox and ubuntu you won't be updated as it were.

Personally I'm using opera at the moment myself as well because FF3 is taking more resources than FF2 and is a bit on the laggy side but have the same issue with it from hardy alpha.

I have seen refernces to the developer summit on the forums as well and would carry on as you are and wait for the buntu upgrade to arrive in due course.

It will get upgraded I guess when they are back and chained to the desk again,

It is being worked on this is a very busy time for the devs most of them are away from home at a week long meeting everyday all day meetings. Please wait 2 weeks until after a new release to ask us to include it. PLease also look into asking us on <email address hidden> or on irc.freenode.net #ubuntu-mozillateam. But once again please wait atleast 2 weeks before asking us, reasons for this is devs can be a bit tied up with meetings, Mozilla team has other packages that get release around same time and might be caught up in a bad bug with that.
PLease dont advise people to install mozillas version and NEVER EVER remove Ubuntus version of Firefox. I will bring alot of needed packages with it. If you cant wait a copuple of days for a release to hit our repos maybe you need to look at it from a developers point of view. Firefox is one of our most important packages but it is not the only.

Oh and toi add we have had rc1 packaged since the first snapshot in out PPA so it could also be late because we found some bugs that we cant let pass archives, or it fails to build. Please refer to https://edge.launchpad.net/~fta/+archive/ for the package. Please DO NOT add it to your sources list but just download the .debs needed. xulrunner and firefox-3 as other things can and will cause you issues. Remember we dont support PPA;s as regular packages if you are using it it is at your own risk.
