If you enter the IP addresses of the sites, 209.85.129.104 is www.google.com and 151.170.240.7 is www.met-office.gov.uk, instead of their domain names does it work then?

Thanks samual for your reply,
I have tried entering the IP addresses for the sites and the
problem is still the same, it just times out. Firefox just
refuses to find some sites. I think that this is giving me a
problem with package management as well, because some
installations stick part way through an installation does the
package management use Firefox by default?

Firefox will go to some sites such as dabs.com with no trouble.

Many thanks Brian Woodhouse

I have had this same problem. If you are using DHCP from your ADSL modem to configure your network, your modem hands out its own address as the primary DNS server. To check this, look in the DNS tab of your network control panel. If the first server listed is your gateway address (the address of your ADSL modem), then this is the issue. The only permanent solution I have found is to static address my Ubuntu box and enter my ISP's DNS server IP addresses manually. Try to use an address for your Ubuntu box that is out of your DHCP server's scope of addresses, which is typically the first hundred addresses in the subnet. For example, on my Qwest Actiontec DSL modem, the default subnet is 192.168.0.0 with broadcast address of 192.168.0.255. Modem/gateway address is 192.168.0.1. Subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. DHCP scope is 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100. I chose a static of 192.168.0.175, but any address between 192.168.0.101 and 192.168.0.254 would have worked. I hope this helps.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/OverrideDNSServers

Just have to insert the DNS server IPs from your ISP.

Mozilla web browsers
With Mozilla web browsers, enter about:config in the address bar and then type ipv6 in the Filter field. Double-click the only listed item, network.dns.disableIPv6, and then close the browser.

From the same ubuntu page(PEOPLEE, WE SHOULD SEARCH BETTER LOOOLLL)

Better yet might be looking for a firmware upgrade so that your router/modem supports ipv6. You can also disable ipv6 for the entire system so that any other programs http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=87798

Problem solved,
"Firefox in Ubuntu will not find all sites" ticket3164.
Thanks to all of you who sent help to me, however the problem was solved when my Linksys adsl modem failed. I replaced it with a Belkin ADSL2+modem with Wireless G router, and all the problems disappeared. All browsers are now working for all sites.
Thanks again brian W.
