There are two forms of launching Thunderbird:

- Launch and handle a mailto link
The first instance is automatically handled in Firefox if Thunderbird is set as GNOME's default email application. I assume this isn't what you are asking about though.

- Launch from request to simply open the program (as from menu launcher)
This is automatic in the Windows version of Firefox, but not in the Linux version. This can be accomplished with a bookmark however, that points to the executable file. The URL would look like this, assuming the executable is installed in that location: file:///usr/bin/thunderbird
This could be used for other programs as well. Also, this could be added as a link in a webpage that you can visit as an alternative to putting in the bookmarks.

If you don't use Gnome or want to setup mail program just for Firefox, open Firefox and in URL enter:

about:config

Press right mouse button and choose "New" -> "String". Preference name is "network.protocol-handler.app.mailto". For Value enter "/usr/bin/mozilla-thunderbird". All inputs are without "". Restart Firefox and give it a try :)

Can you help with this problem?
