Cant run turbo-tax or mount drives

Asked by Mike

I am not able to use my floppy, CD-ROM, DVD player with Ubuntu 5.10. At first I could use my Floppy drive, now I get a error unable to mount the selected volume, Error: given UDI is not a mountable volume. How do I fix these problems?
Also I can't run programs like turbo-tax with any Linux OP. How can I do this with any cdrom program? I am a New Be so I need detailed information. I have tried the terminal to change or to install something, lets say internal modem. Can't get pass root user or access denied. Not sure how to use these tools. Every thing else seems to work fine. Help Mike

It seems that you've neglected to unmount the disk before ejecting it. Try shutting down and when you're done with the disk, go to Places>Computer and right click on the floppy drive icon, and select "Unmount Media" from the drop-down menu. Alternatively, open a terminal and type "sudo umount -l /dev/fd0" (without the quotes). You'll be prompted for a password; type your user password here.

The CD-ROM issue is rather weird. It should automatically mount when you put the disc in the drive. Yes, you must unmount these to eject them, too, which can be done with "sudo umount -l /media/cdrom".

To get root, type sudo before the command like I've done in the two previous commands I've told you about. Installing internal modems can be a bit tricky, so the following link might be a good place to start: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DialupModemHowto

Lastly, TurboTax will not run on any GNU/Linux system, at least not "out-of-the-box". It might work under WINE (sudo apt-get install wine), but it's a long shot. If you don't mind paying for an improved front-end to WINE (and slightly more up-to-date application support), there's also Crossover Office (http://www.codeweavers.com). There are services that can take care of this functionality completely online in many countries. There's a thread about it here: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=101428
