google toolbar could not be installed on Firefox/2.0 (Ubuntu-edgy)

Asked by miron

I'm using Firefox/2.0 (Ubuntu-edgy) under Ubuntu 6.10.

When I try to install the Google toolbar from the Google website http://www.google.com/tools/firefox/toolbar/index.html?utm_source=en-et-more&utm_medium=et&utm_campaign=en
I get the following message:
"Google Toolbar for Firefox" could not be installed because it is not compatible with your Firefox build type (linux-gnu_x86-gcc3).

The same toolbar was working fine with Firefox provided with Ubuntu 6.06 (I don't remember, which version of Firefox it was).

What could be wrong?

Ubuntu Dapper (6.06) has Firefox 1.5 whereas 6.10 and 7.04 have Firefox 2.0. Note the error message you are getting says "please contact the author of this item about the problem.". That's google, they wrote the extension.

I'm afraid you'll need to take it up with them. The following support group is probably the best place to start:-

Finally the solution:

The new beta toolbar works on edgy:

Provided by GoogleToolbar Firefox Help.

Seems to be working fine. Thanks for advice.
