Also. This is what happened, our hard drive crashed, when we tried to get ahold of our repair man, he closed his business. After replacing the drive. We downloaded firefox (3.6.10) Now it doesn't want to upgrade with the newest version ( I think 11.0?) Also need plug-ins for video, and so forth. Any help you can give me would be great, but again I'm not computer literate. THANK YOU!! And my name is Liz, Johns wife.

John to answer your #3. Check site below.

https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/department/web-browsers/?page=1

I use Chrome, which is not on above site list. It is very important to give output of the lsb_release -a; uname -a command. Requested by Actionparsnip. You need to use Terminal, this site will tell you how.

http://askubuntu.com/questions/38162/what-is-a-terminal-and-how-do-i-open-and-use-it

Just use CTRL + ALT + T keys, leaving out + .

I did not see the last sentence you wrote. Sorry, getting old. Something is not right, Firefox 40 is out now. That is what you should be using. I do not understand how you downloaded Firefox 3.6.10. Firefox 11, was released in 2012. Below will show the latest Firefox releases.

Firefox Version Release date
Firefox 43 2015-12-15
Firefox 42 2015-11-03
Firefox 41 2015-09-22
Firefox 40 2015-08-11
Firefox 39 2015-06-30
Firefox 38.0.5 2015-06-02
Firefox 38 (ESR base) 2015-05-12
Firefox 37 2015-03-31
Firefox 36 2015-02-24
Firefox 35 2015-01-13

Please give answer to request #2 above from Actionparsnip. If you are not sure how to, look at #6, second site. After reading site, if you have questions, just ask here.

It keeps saying that Firefox is 'Already Installed' I'm afraid that if I delete it I won't be-able to get back online..? Is that a possibility, to delete then reinstall?

John or Liz
This site is for Ubuntu (Linux) support. We can't help with Windows problems. The best thing to do is Google Windows support, or Google your question. Google the question just like you wrote it here.

I'm sorry I must not of explained #8 that well. While this computer (this is john's, using the ubuntu) was crashed. I went on my own computer, which uses windows 7, and downloaded ubuntu onto a disk, actually 3 different versions, John must have pick up the first one he saw and uploaded it into this computer. My question is, can we delete this OLD version of ubuntu without messing it up, there's not even a DESKTOP, no apps, no add-ons or even a tool button, The only thing this is capable of doing is go on the internet, in which it's such and older version... well hardly anything on it.
But if your unable to help, We will try Google. Thank you for your time and for replying so quickly! Liz

Will answer questions about Ubuntu. I am having a problem with Launchpad logging me off randomly, so my answers may be only be short. I think 14.04 would be best for you. Need to make and model of your computer. Check (Google) Ubuntu releases at "https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases" with no ". If I go get the site address, Launchpad logs me off. What release of Ubuntu are you using?

OK Please go to this site.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

EOL (end of life) is important. It tells when support stops. Probably Ubuntu 14.04 will be best for you. Support until 2019. What make and model computer are you using? This will help decide if you need something that uses less resources, like Xubuntu or Lubuntu.
Your question about deleting OLD Ubuntu, is relatively easy to answer, when I understand how you installed it. Below sites will show proper way.

http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/install-ubuntu-desktop

Problems on this end. Very confusing, I was logged off, but found the answer I was writing. You take #12 and #13 as together.
I assume you mean John's computer will have only Ubuntu on it. Please bear with me, I will work on my problem (logouts) later.
If Ubuntu was the only operating system, on John's computer, install a new release will wipe it out.

I think lucid lynx 2012 version, Don't ask me how that happened.
I can't upload a new release! Going in circles... have downloads on the desktop, and burned another dvd of Ubuntu 'Desktop' version 14.04.3.
Cannot get it to install...
And yes this is John's computer.

Do you know if DVD is first boot, in BISO? Have you tried the "Try Ubuntu", when it is booting? When you burned the DVD,was it an ISO? DO NOT let all these crazy words (BIOS, DVD, ISO), or questions, bother you in any way. Answer what you can. What you can't, tell me and we can work it out. Is the computer a desktop or laptop?

This is the way to get into BIOS. If BIOS is not set for DVD to boot first, you will not be able to load Ubuntu.

Press the Power button to start the computer.
NOTE: Pressing F10 opens the BIOS of Compaq Presario desktops 2001 and earlier.

Pressing F1 opens the BIOS of the S3000 series, 6400 series, and 2002 models of Presario desktop computers.

Immediately press the F10 or F1 key repeatedly on the keyboard when the logo screen displays.

Look on outside of computer, for something like 3000, or 4000, or any number. The name Presario, or another name may be there.

If you get into BIOS, study it and try to move around in it. If you can, on your Windows 7, Google BIOS, see if there is any help there.
