firefox 1.5 closes dapper amd64

Asked by dpgravjob

Have got a problem with Firefox on ubuntu amd64 ( has sun java 64 but no flash)

on specific websites the browser just crashes and disappears ( closes ) no error messages at all the main two websites that do this are www.myspace.com and www.essentialbaby.com.au and other from time to time but mainly these two.

not sure if there are any log files that may help diagnose this issue as no matter if using tabbed browsing or multiply windows all instances of firefox disappear.

firefox is currently 1.5 not game to upgrade to 2.0 yet

have another machine running dapper i386 and no such problems on any websites at all. (also has flash ) have used both firefox 1.5 and 2.0

Please help will provide any other info as required.

Thanks Damien

Why not use 32bit-Firefox on amd64? that is possible, with 32bit-firefox you'll also get flash working

got same problem...installed flash player ok with messages saying administrator should remove xpti.dat from components directory of mozilla browser.
I did a search on this file and it doesn't find. It also says to install fonts
gsfonts and gsfont-x11. It may be the flash player won't run for lack of fonts.
Will try this....let know.

This will fix my error (running 32bit firefox) but defeats the purpose of having 64 os running 32bit application I am happy to use without flash as long as it doesn't crash all the time.
have second machine that run flash programs.

have just tried running firefox from the command line and this is the error that occurs when browsing the websites that crash firefox

The program 'Gecko' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadShmSeg (invalid shared segment parameter)'.
  (Details: serial 489 error_code 168 request_code 146 minor_code 2)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error()
function.)

Hope this will help get my error sorted will give any other error that will help

I don't know if this is related My Firefox now marked 1.5.0.9 was perfect until I received an automatic update this morning 1/4/07. 10 am pst
Now it closes at the point of entering my saved password on sites
with a two stage log in: bank of america, my email spam filter.
I deleted those passwords in preferences. It works when I enter them
manually. michael hallett

A ubuntu patch seems to have been removed from the 1.5.0.9 build, details in Bug #77859, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/77859

Any ideas on how to get someone in the security or firefox teams to notice?

This problem maybe because you have another plugin more for see flash. Try using only the plugin for firefox, i resolved that on my dapper64 long time ago.

I have the same problem with Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 and Firefox ver. 2.0.0.12. This morning I was writing an email using Gmail and Firefox "folded" as I wrote. No message to indicate a problem and it did not "crash" or lock up. I launched Firefox again and it allowed me to restore the session. It came back up into Gmail and I could go back to the draft and continue to write as if nothing had happened.
This has happened in several other instances. It is an annoyance to be sure but I'm very glad that it is easy to recover from it.
Is anyone else having the same problem with these versions?

Can you help with this problem?
