Firefox won't play video files

Asked by Alfredo

Binary package hint: firefox

When I try to play a video file (.wmv), Firefox states I don't have a plugin installed. It then gives me a list of four possible ones, being Xine, Totem, VLC and Mplayer. I've tried installing and reinstalling all but Totem, but I still keep receiving the same message. About:plugins in Firefox indicates I have no plugins installed for Windows Media files.
I'm running Hardy Alpha 4 and Firefox 3.0b3.

Hi Alfredo
this doesn't seem a bug itself but a question instead, so i'm redirecting it to the support tracker where you can obtain an answer which can also help other people with the same issue.

Thanks

Hi Basilio

That depends on how you look at it. If you provide a function where Firefox automatically installs plugins and for some reason they don't work afterwards (while they did in Gutsy), I would consider it a bug.
It may be that the beta version of Firefox 3 isn't compatible with the plugins available, but then they shouldn't be suggested in the first place.

I installed firefox-3.0 on gutsy. No plugins were found, because
/usr/lib/firefox-3.0/plugins was not linked to /usr/lib/firefox/plugins

Thanks Matt, creating a link fixed my problem.

In my opinion though, that's something the installer should do. Or at least install the plugins in the correct folder, namely firefox-addons (which seems to be what Firefox 3.0 uses).
