Try using Rhythmbox. It plays Internet Radio very nicely.
Installing the gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly and -multiverse packages will allow you to listen to MP3 stations, the w32codecs package even Windows Media stations.

Type
sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-plugins-multiverse w32codecs
to install them.

You can also try XMMS - it's similar to winamp - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/XMMS

In XMMS easy right click in window (window border) → Play location → here add url of stream

is the stream url, its easy to find the urls, just open the .pls files with an editor auf your choice :)

I just installed RealPlayer from

https://helixcommunity.org/projects/player/files/download/2489

and it works fine. Download the binary file, change it to be executable with

chmod +x realplay-10.0.9.809-linux-2.2-libc6-gcc32-i586.bin

and run it with

./realplay-10.0.9.809-linux-2.2-libc6-gcc32-i586.bin

This should do the trick.

→ the real name of the package is only "realplay", so only "sudo apt-get install realplay"

Which video did you try to play? So I can try whether it works with my installation. Also, do you try to open the realvideo through your browser or directly with the player?

Playing videos from Youtube works differently. It uses Flash videos, not the RealPlayer. You simply need to install the package "flashplugin-nonfree" and it should work.

Let's see if you can open another video - maybe it's just a problem with that specific video resource. Please try to open the realvideo on this page:

Did you change anything when it switched from the "shared library"-error to the resource error? What is the exact error message, "Could not read from resource" or "Could not write to resource"?
