FBI virus

Asked by kayg on 2013-12-07

I was surfing the web when a pop up claiming to be the FBI appeared. I know it's a fake because of the claims it is making. Also, it said I lived in a place I don't and it wants me to pay $300 through a credit card thing you buy at 7-11 or Walgreens. When I pulled up another page to look into the website it was coming from, it took over that page, too. Neither pages will close, by the way, and both are saying I live in two different places. So, I opened another page and researched it, ultimately finding out it was a virus. Different sites showed ways to easily get rid of the bug (through Task Manager with Windows and restarting computer on safe mode). However, I am completely computer illiterate with Ubuntu and Linux. I had a friend wipe my drive and download this software because he said it was bullet proof and it was! I've been satisfied with my system for nearly five years and have never run into a problem! I simply don't know how to get rid of this bug without destroying my computer.

If you have any steps I could follow, that'd be much appreciated! Otherwise, I will take any answers or help I can get.

Thank you for your time!

These are spoofs and fake. They will not affect your Ubuntu install and you should not pay any cash.
Due to the user modelling in Linux it is very hard to get a virus and none of the small handful of viruses for Linux are wild.

Can you help with this problem?
