How do you degrade an upgrade already downloaded?

Asked by Jrod

When I downloaded Ubuntu 7.10, I thought it was going to be better but turned out to make things worse such as making the graphics look pretty bad and my internet screen a lot smaller even though I resized it, it was still practically the same. What I had done was when I was downloading security updates, I saw it said download Ubuntu 7.10 which I thought was going to be better but turned out worse. I tried to find a way to cancel it and go back to my old Ubuntu which turned out to be better but I just can't find a way to degrade or cancel this upgrade that I already downloaded to go back to my old Ubuntu.

I tried the source you gave me but it didn't help, it told me to press forward but nothing happened. If you can give me another source, I would really appreciate that.

Thanks,
Jrod

Jrod,

There is no easy, or recommended way to downgrade to a previous release. What method did you use to upgrade to 7.10? Please link to the guide you used if any.

Would you be willing to download the 7.10 liveCD and see if that works for you, as it may have just been the install, and not inherently 7.10.

Best Regards,
Williamts99

Well, what I had done to get the upgrade was that my Ubuntu always has security updates every so often and then after it showed me the updates, it said at the top of the page to install the better Ubuntu 7.10. So I upgraded it and it took about 1 hour and 30 min and when it restarted my computer and I logged onto my user name, the graphics turned out bad and my internet screen got too big to say and I always have to constantly scroll up and down and side to side with this new upgrade when before, my old Ubuntu had it a perfect size in which I only had to scroll up and down no matter how big the internet page was.

Hope this helps,
Jrod

Hello Jrod..

If the graphics is dodgy, you can try to change video resolution...
- first try to dynamically change screen resolution plese the press CTR + ALT + "+" and/or CTRL + ALT + "-"
- Try to restart the graphic layer press CTR + ALT + BACKSPACE

Reconfiguring your xserver-xorg may help you.

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

To make a backup copy of your actual /etc/X11/xorg.conf type:

cd /etc/X11
sudo cp xorg.conf xorg.conf.bak

give your user password when requested, you don't see anything when you type it, then press enter.

Then try to reconfigure your xserver-xorg

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

answer to the simply questions, select multiple more than one screen resolutions when asked, then restart the pc.

If something goes wrong you can restore the saved copy of your old configuration, open a terminal or login to a virtual terminal by pressing ctrl+alt+F2 and type:

cd /etc/X11
sudo cp xorg.conf.bak xorg.conf

and restart the pc, type:

sudo reboot

Hope this helps

Bhavani Shankar.
