Firefox freezes on yahoo mail sign in page

Asked by Prince Ranger

I am running Ubuntu/7.10 (gutsy) Firefox/2.0.0.11. It is updated to current.

System freeze occurs every time that I go to the Yahoo Sign In page for a secure sign in. Cntrl/Alt/Del will not function and the pointer freezes and the system is locked in place. So far I have been able to exit only by shutting down power to the computer.

At the moment of freezing, the following is displayed on the Progress Bar at the bottom of the screen:

     "Waiting for a248.e.akamai.net."

I understand that this site has something to do with authentication and/or certification in secure transactions.

I have Accepting Cookies and PopUps enabled.

Note, I tried running with my Ubuntu installation disk in Live CD mode, i.e. booting and operating from the CD and not the hard drive. Guess what, NO freezing!!! There is no freezing on the Yahoo Sign In page in Live CD mode.

So I tried reinstalling Firefox and its dependencies. No luck, the freezing still occurs with reinstallation.

I have found a few references to this problem in my internet search, including one in this forum on signing in to UPS securely.

I can't use Firefox with my Yahoo account. The only browser in the Ubuntu packages that does not have this problem is Opera. (I tried them all.) I am using Opera for this reason but it has a problem in Yahoo Mail that for now I live with; it functions poorly in the New Version (Beta) of Yahoo mail but, at least OK in Yahoo Mail Classic (the old version).

Please advise.

Please try with alpha8 release of firefox-3.0

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install firefox-3.0

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then you will find it under menu Applications->Internet->...

Hope this helps

Thank you Marcobra for your interest and exact Terminal lines.

I followed your directions exactly but 3.0 does not show up in Applications so at this point I don't know how to launch it.

It does show up in Synaptic Package Manager as 3.0 as well as my original Firefox/2.0.0.11.

Please advise.

you can start it from the terminal by typing

firefox-3.0 &

or you can create a new menu item manually by using System->Preferences->Main Menu

Thank you both, Koen and Marcobra.

Firefox 3.0 does indeed allow me to sign into Yahoo Mail, i.e. it does not freeze the system upon loading the sign in page.

Actually, Marcobra's directions did work all the way through including placing 3.0 in the Application Menu even though I stated above that it did not.

The thing is, Firefox 3.0 is presented as GRANPARADISO WEB BROWSER . That is why I didn't see it at first. Indeed only after following Koen's good directions did I see that it led to the launching of GWB (FIREFOX 3.0 PREVIEW)!!!

It does present a few anomalies that should be corrected.

Upon logging into Yahoo Mail a notice pops up that I will be having problems using Firefox 1.0 and would I like to update to the current Firefox version. Apparently GWB does not identify itself properly.

After bypassing the update offer another two errors of many words pop up but after closing them I was able to use my Yahoo Mail in GWB (Firefox 3.0 Preview).

There is also a too small font problem in the address window.

But in the end, I can now use Firefox in Yahoo Mail and I learned some more in Terminal commands.

Thanks again to both of you.

Please, using Firefox alpha8 3.0 menu: Help -> Report broken site, send your issue to Firefox development team.

BTW now Firefox-3.0 is in beta 2 stage

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.0b2/releasenotes/

http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.0b2/

I will send something to Ubuntu team... to include beta2 into repository

Thank you

Prince Ranger,

You can also remove your .mozilla folder and see if that fixes your problems. First you should backup your bookmarks if you so choose.

Close Firefox, then goto Places>Home Folder, then press ctrl+h to show hidden folders, and delete the .mozilla folder

This will remove all your personal files for Firefox and start over fresh.
