problems with Ubuntu

Asked by RL Boone

Up on starting up computer and going with Ubuntu as what is to run it takes 2minutes and 45 seconds to load to the sign in page. Also can't load other windows to which I ran before. Windows XP will not load at all and Ubuntu is a long time in loading. I have tried to have it install and open the ssh-server and it says it is there but can't it will not respond. What am I doing wrong?
My son a college professor wanted me to try this and he can't seem to figure out just why I am having trouble with windows not loading and Ubuntu taking so long his is very quick and he says I should be as quick or quicker.

Sounds to me like a hardware issue. Maybe your hard drive is badly defragmented, or has many corrupted sectors, or possibly you have a problem with your system memory (RAM)?
Might be worth running the memory checking diagnostic on the 7.10 live CD from boot (for the RAM) as for the HDD, a copy of the XP Preinstallation Kit (OPK) will get scandisk and defrag going.

Well I am still running with Ubuntu after losing all my data from windows. I guess it was a problem with my hard drive but cleaned it and reloaded windows xp and had some problems so came back to Ubuntu so I could at least get mail and carry on.
No one seemed to know why it didn't work but I can't worry about that now. Thanks for the help and I will learn about Ubuntu so will stay as is. Thanks Diesel and others.
