Home page in Firefox

Asked by Skip Plummer

In Firefox (Ubuntu 6.10) I am not able to display any of my home pages (MyWay, Yahoo, etc). As soon as they load, the display drops back to the desktop.

Do you mean Firefox crashes? If so, you may consider to obtain a backtrace (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace) and fill a new bug report.

Yes. Any time that I go to Firefox and then try to browse to any one of
my home pages (with intent to make it my default home page in Firefox),
Firefox "disappears" and the computer just jumps back to the Ubuntu 6.10
desktop.

I have used Ubuntu 6.06 on this computer for quite some time and never
experienced this problem before.

Is there not a way to assign a home page/browser to Firefox in Ubuntu
6.10? Is there some kind of a HTML problem that I'm overlooking here?

Open Firefox in a terminal and write down what it reports.
Can you list the step you make when you see this crash?

The steps that I am taking to reproduce this crash of Firefox are as
follows: I open Firefox and get the Firefox/Ubuntu welcome screen. I
then type the address of my preferred home page (www.my.myway.com) into
the address bar at the top of the page. If the default myway home page
loads, everything is fine. But... As soon as I try to log into my
myway account, so that my local news, weather, TV listings, etc will be
displayed, Firefox, in effect, "disappears" and the machine just jumps
right back to the original Ubuntu 6.10 desktop that is there each time
the computer is started up.

This was not a problem with Ubuntu 6.06. In 6.06 I could use Firefox to
navigate to www.my.myway.com, log into my home page, and then set
www.my.myway.com as my default home page for Firefox. Any time that I
clicked on Firefox in 6.06 it would go to my "myway" home page and my
home page would automatically be displayed along with local news,
weather, sports and TV listings.

In Ubuntu 6.10 I can find no way to approach or display my home page at
www.my.myway.com.

I believe that I can correct this problem by re-installing Ubuntu 6.06.
6.06 presented no problems when accessing my home pages at my.myway.com,
yahoo.com or excite.com.

I use a fixed, wireless ISP along with wireless access points within the
house for the three computers that are usually online. The data stream
that I have access to is a 2.0 Gb's/psec stream and the house is online
24/7. I have been online since before there was a Microsoft Windows
operating system.

Are you following what I'm saying here? In Firefox in Ubuntu 6.06 I
could set Firefox to whichever of my home pages that I wanted it to
default to and that's the home page that Firefox would default to. In
Ubuntu 6.10 I cannot set any home page as the default home page in
Firefox.

The more that I experiment with this, there's been a whole segment of
file handling left out of this new release. I have email accounts
within MyWay, Yahoo and Excite and there is no way to log into them from
within Firefox in this new release. Any attempt to do so results in
dropping back to the Ubuntu 6.10 desktop. This is a fault that was not
present in the 6.06 release.

I believe that there is a problem in the data base with this new
release. It does not seem to be a "loop" or "endless loop" but it does
seem to be a missing "jump" or "exclusive jump" somewhere n the
programming. I am familiar with FAT16, FAT32 and NTFS formatting but I
am not familiar with Linux.

Is there someone available to work on a patch for this (I think that it
may be in the Firefox module)? Or should I forget about it for now and
re-install Ubuntu 6.06?

Have you tried reinstalling firefox? This can be done quickly and easily from the Synaptic Package Manager.

I have installed the complete 6.10 from one installation CD which had the
results that I'm reporting here. I then re-installed 6.06 from another
installation CD and had no problems with Firefox while running 6.06. After
that, I re-installed 6.10 from a second installation CD (thinking that there
may have been an error on the first installation CD) but upon re-installing
6.10 I found that the Firefox browser still would not let me assign any of
my home pages to it as a default home page. Further, it will not let me log
in to any of my home pages or third party email accounts while using Firefox
Any time that I try to do so, it immediately "drops back" to the Ubuntu 6
10 desktop. Again, I experience no such problem if I am running 6.06.

I have been using 6.06 on one of my computers for quite some time now and
was completely satisfied with it. I had no problem accessing third party
browsers or email accounts in MyWay, Yahoo, etc (whether or not they were
POP or web mail). Firefox in 6.10 will not go near MyWay, Yahoo, etc. I do
note that the startup and shutdown times are greatly improved in 6.10 over
what they were in 6.06.

This is a failure to connect with any home page or email account that
requires a user name and password to log into.

I hate to say it but I am sorely tempted to take the dynamic step backwards
and re-install 6.06. The Firefox browser was completely addressable in 6.06

I am writing zeros to the HDD on the Gateway computer in question here...
for the next hour or so. When it finishes I will either install Ubuntu 6.06
Xandros Desktop Premium (I'll have to research whether or not it's wireless
compatible) or re-install XP Professional as the computer seemed to get
along quite well with XP. As I said before, Ubuntu 6.06 was working quite
well, wireless access point, the works. If you have any other suggestions
where Ubuntu 6.10 and Firefox are concerned, I'd like to hear them.

Oddly enough I have been thinking about going back to 6.06 myself. There has been a lot of strange behavior in 6.10. Have you considered filing a bug report about this before switching back? Also have you done what Luca has said about running firefox from a terminal and seeing what it says in the terminal when it crashes? Also if you want to stay with 6.10 even while the issue is being resolved, you could think about installing a different web browser for the time being.

I'll tell you what... I have re-installed XP Professional on the computer in question with no ill effects (I'm using it right now). This is the computer that was running 6.06 since it was released. I think that I would be more inclined to check the Ubuntu web site from time to time. I am thinking that sooner or later I waill see the problem addressed there and could, once again, download the files and burn another installation CD.

Did you do a fresh install of Ubuntu 6.10 or did you upgrade to 6.10 from 6.06 and keep your original /home/<username> directory and files.

If you upgraded and kept your home directory, I think you were seeing conflicts between 6.06's Firefox 1.5 settings in the .mozilla directory and 6.10's Firefox 2.0 settings.

I am on 6.06 and I added Firefox 2.0 by hand from the Mozilla website. It was "quirky" until I removed the .mozilla directory and allowed Firefox 2.0 to rewrite it from scratch.

you've given me an unanswerable question, just at the moment. where the
computer in question is concerned, I did a complete "wipe" of the HDD (all
zeros) and re-installed MS XP Professional.

yesterday I moved that computer out of it's "slot" and replaced it with a
new Everex StepNote notebook computer that I am setting up for a client with
the requested MS XP Home OS.

on my own Gateway notebook (the computer that I'm having the trouble with) I
was running Ubuntu 6.06 through a wireless access point to my wireless ISP
with no problems which is why I elected to attempt the move to 6.10. I may
have ended up doing an "update" to 6.10, as you mentioned, without even
knowing it, and that may have been the problem as you suggested. at the
time that I was attempting the install I tried both Ubuntu 6.10 and Kubuntu
6.10 and had the same browser problems with both of them. I don't believe,
in either case, that I "wiped" the HDD to zeros before the install as I did
before re-installing MS XP Professional the last time..

I'm kind of in limbo at the moment. I don't have any room left, just now,
to work on my own equipment. I intend to look into this some more after
this Everex StepNote notebook is completed.

Jim Jones,

I think that it may be safe to close that ticket now. Even though I had
just done a successful complete installation of XP Professional on my
Gateway Solo notebook, I today attempted another full installation of Ubuntu
6.10 on that same notebook computer. During the installation it said that
it would re-format the whole HDD and I told it to go ahead. It looks as
though all is well with Firefox and the ability to assign it the desired
home page. This time I also changed my bios from DOS to OTHER in the LBA
department. I'm not exactly sure what the complete answer to the problem
was but it seems to be working correctly as of now.

Jim Jones,

I think that I wanted to close that ticket a little too soon. Everything
was working fine until the home page that I was using wanted to download and
install the Macromedia Flash Player to enable the rest of it's display
capabilities. I allowed it to do so and now I, once again, can not assign
or display any desired home pages in Firefox. And I am completely lost as
to how to find and uninstall the Macromedia Flash Player that is messing
things up.

Jim,

This is some "after the fact" information. After allowing the My.MyWay.com
home page to install its' own version of Macromedia (and that was the end of
my home pages) I noticed that there is a place from within Ubuntu to install
a version of Macromedia Flash Player (that is not the one that I used). Is
this a compatibility problem with the Macromedia Flash Player from outside
the Ubuntu group and the one that would come from within?

This problem with the Macromedia Flash Player did not occur this way in 6.06

Hi Jim,

With the lack of any other input as to what to do about this Macromedia
Flash problem, I think that I'm inclined to re-install the whole 6.10
version again and then install the Macromedia Flash Player from within the
Ubuntu group before attempting to go to any of the home pages that I choose
to use regularly (from within Firefox). If that takes care of the problem
that will be fine. If this behavior returns after that course of action I
think that I will just junk the whole idea, remove Ubuntu 6.10 and brand it
as "not useable due to it's inability to operate with Macromedia Flash
Player"; a neccessary component for web activity.

Jim,

Ubuntu has a problem. Going to any home page will cause a crash in Firefox
(Ubuntu 6.10) if Macromedia Flash Player is installed. Many features of
many home pages can not, or will not be enabled without the installation of
Macromedia Flash Player. I figured out how to install and uninstall
Macromedia Flash Player from within Ubuntu 6.10 to verify that this problem
does exist.

A couple of updates just came down for Ubuntu 6.10 and were installed.
I am hoping that these had one thing or another to do with the inability
to run Macromedia Flash Player within Mozilla Firefox on the 6.10
release that has just come out. It was not clear whether or not that
was what these two updates were for. Should I now attempt to complete
my home pages with the Macromedia software?

I had the same problem, Firefox 2.0 always crashed when entering a page with flash (and also some with with JavaScript), but it continued crashing if I uninstalled flash so I had to install FlashBlock :S

I readed about some other people with the same problem in a catalan support forum.

This morning I installed some updates (that don't looked to be firefox-related) and when I tried viewing a flash movie... it worked!

Don't know if it the updated solved it or just my PC is mad, but you could try it...

I think that I'm not that brave. I removed Ubuntu 6.10 and re-installed

crashes while in Firefox and while using Flash Player or Java.
