Firefox: printout with hp-LJ2100M extremely slow

Asked by Mike

Actually several problems with Firefox 18.0 (Ububtu 12.04)

1. Firefox refuses to accept the HP LJ 2100M as default printer
for page setup and insists on "Any printer for portable documents".

2. Print-out from Firefox is v e r y s l o w, typically 15 minutes per
A4 page, if a JPEG file is anywhere on the page. This is a real pain.

I've tried editing about:config print.printer_*.* variables but to no
avail. Printer is a dual langage HPGL/PostScript laser printer about
1998 vintage. Driver is CUPS.

How do I enforce some "compliance" on Firefox re printer setup and
speed up the printout?? All help gratefully received.

Best wishes,
Mike.

Do other applications print ok?

To Actionparsnip.

First thanks for your response; much appreciated.

The answer to your question is "yes and no".
Concerning Firefox (and also Thunderbird), text-only messages print without delay.
The problem manifests itself when images are included, even a small "smiley" in an
e-mail. Similar things happen with LibreOffice. Gedit prints out OK.

I have a gut feeling that excessive file format conversion (JPEG >> PDF >> PS) may
be the cause but I can't prove that. Note that this Ubuntu installation is only about
3 weeks old, and I haven't got to know it in all possible detail yet. But the usual
Help sources haven't helped (!) and I can't rule out "own finger troubles" as yet.

More TechStuff: Motherboard is Asus P8B75-MLE and installation of Ubuntu 12.04
seemed to go without any hitches. Interface to printer is via a USB to Parallel adapter
cable which has functioned well for several years up to now.)

Hope this all helps.
Regards,
Mike.

Thanks for the tip.
I decided to re-install the printer with a different driver taken from Ubntu's
list. (I'm afraid I didn't note which one). First impressions are that it has made
a significant improvement in print speed. I think we can consider the matter
satisfactorily closed.
Conclusion: It pays to experiment with printer drivers.

Again thanks for you help.
Regards
Mike.
