How to close "history windows" under screen

Asked by Gnusboy

There are many, many tabs open on a screen that is only visible when I click "plus sign" to open a new tab in Firefox. These sub-windows do not go away - even with a full reboot of my system. There is an individual tab for every page (site) I have viewed.
It's like a history file in tab form.
They do not go away when I use quit under the Firefox file header. They do not go away when I use the quit function on the Firefox icon on the launcher. When I do from scratch boot they are still there ad infinitum.
It's only when I open a new blank tab in the title bar that they are visible.
I have turned off all the remember history and browsing options, turned on the "do not track" and set the "use custom settings for history" and the location option is set to remember "nothing."
I've cleared the "cache" and "offline web content and user data"
The tabs are not pinned to anything either.
What is the problem with this and how do I fix it.

This problem is just one of several I've had with Firefox and Chromium since I upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 and "Unity" last week, but I will stick to one problem at a time.
Thanks.

Click the tab and press CTRL+W. Does this work?

Unfortunately, this does not solve my problem. Using tab and CTRL+W opens the back screen, but there are literally dozens of previous page windows that won't close unless I click them one at a time.

I thought it was a "workspace window" the pages were on, but if I switch around through the desktop workspaces, they don't show up there.

I need one trick that can close ALL of the windows at once. I hope someone can figure this out.

Thanks

Please open a terminal: ctrl+alt+t
Enter:
top

The output will show a listing of processes. To stop the output press: q (for quit)
You can highlight the processes per mouse and paste it here with middle mouse click.

In case of lots of firefox processes, you can kill each one by pid or with: killall firefox

A screenshot would be helpful too. Upload it to your preferred web site and post the link here. Thanks.
