issues after update(s)

Asked by Ulrike Bildstein

We've been running Ubuntu 10.4 for a long time, and were very satisfied. As it is no longer supported, we upgraded to 10.10 last Saturday. But then, videos from YouTube or the webradio or videos from SWR (www.swr.de) or Energy (www.energy.de) no longer played in firefox.

Deistalling and reinstalling flash player or other players didn't help.

I hoped switching to 11.4 (Natty Narwhal) could help and installed the package on Monday (21 Oct). It includes firefox 16.0.1. But the problem remained. Strangely, installing the plugin "QuickJava 1.8.0" fixed the problem for YouTube, but not for the web radios and SWR video stream. But the Tagesschau video stream works.

I can't find the button to activate/inactivate Java at all on the browser. (I have issues with the menu system of NattyNarwhal in general, but that's another matter).

Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) is end of life (EOL) as of April 2012, 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) is also EOL as of this month.
You were better off with 10.04 which is still supported until April 2013.

I would recommend you back up all your data then do a clean install of either 12.04.1LTS (Precise Pangolin) supported till April 2017 or 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal), the new one supported till April 2014.

You may want to take a look at Xubuntu rather than Ubuntu depending on your machines specifications.

I suggest you try each of live CD / USB first, Make sure everything works then when you have chosen the one you like do a full install

Downloads are available here. Make sure you check the MD5sum to ensure the download went OK.

Clean install means not upgrading, but installing everything from scratch?

What helps me to decide between ubuntu and Xubuntu?

We also have a windows partition used only to run games, would that be affected resp. how can it be protected?

One strange thing that happened with the second update concerns the GRUB2. The GRUB menu is not displayed because the program sends signals to the monitor that the monitor can't process (it gives an error message that the horizontal and vertical frequencies are out of range). It is still possible to use the keyboard's "down" and "enter" keys to choose the desired OS (knowing Windows is the lowest entry).

Thank you very much for your help!

1. Yes, clean install means not upgrading, but installing everything from scratch I find Its gives you a cleaner system.

2. The latest version of Ubuntu uses Unity this is very different from Ubuntu 10.04 and may feel slow on older hardware. Xubuntu is more similar to the old 10.04 desktop and runs faster too. You can try both and see which you like by running from the CD/DVD/USB stick.

3. Make sure you back up Windows too just to be safe but they can be installed side by side easily see here.

4. Grub2. I don't see why not but I have no experience. My monitor works.

I finally found time to do a CD with ubuntu 12.04 today. I ran it from
the CD as tryout session and everything worked fine. So I installed it
on my hard disk, choosing the "replace" option.

The weird thing is that the problems I had with the previous versions
remained exactly the same once I had the new version installed on hard disk!
