firefox completely disappeared after recent upgrade Ubuntu 12.04

After a recent update upon 'restart' firefox was completely GONE. On the launch sidebar in its place was a pdf reader. tried to install firefox all I got was a large file - firefox-15.0.1.tar.bz2 I have no idea what I'm suppose to do with this? Also, found in systems - details- defaults - that the pdf reader was set as the default browser? which I assume is where my firefox use to be? Prior to doing in install off internet I searched in my Dash home for firefox - wasn't there. I also have chrome and opera, opera is having weird issues too - when I want to close it this pop ups - "It appears another Opera instance is using the same configuration directory because it's lock file is active: /home/myname/.opera/lock Do you want to start Opera anyway?"

Between this and my printer not working I'm really close to calling it quicks for ubuntu 12.04 and any ubuntu or any linux.

Try:

sudo apt-get --reinstall install firefox

You don't need the archive you downloaded.

Do not know how much experience you have with Ubuntu. In case you have not used Terminal before, open it with Ctrl+Alt+T. Copy actionparsnip's request, and paste in the open Terminal.

Okay, thanks that worked - EXCEPT on the launcher it is using the PDF icon as the Firefox Icon - when I try to drop the Firefox icon into the launcher the pdf icon won't let me....

I don't know what you mean - when I rebooted after an update the pdf reader icon showed up where the firefox icon used to be, I didn't do anything and when I checked the defaults in system settings - details the pdf was set as the default browser (which used to be Firefox) This thing is truly confused, as am I.
