Hyperlink for pdf does not open pdf in Firefox

Often when I view a web page that contains a hyperlink for a pdf and I click on the hyperlink, a new tab opens in Firefox but the pdf is not displayed. Any body know the cause and the solution?
PS I'm using Ubuntu Lucid with Firefox 15.0.1. I have PDF Download 3.0.0.2 addon/extension installed
