cannot figure out how to defrag my system

Asked by darcy newth

cannot figure out how to defrag PC or where to even find this option on my ubuntu system that i recently purchased (used)

I have tried to install (download) disc defragmenters, but they always seem to come up with an error. my computer is running very slow and locking up on me all the time. perhaps you can send a download to my e-mail that I can copy (but you will also have to give me directions on how to copy it to my computer (I am not very computer literate)

There should be no need to defragment a Linux system. It has a different structure.

How much RAM memory do you have? Has it always run slowly or has it become slower?

I do not know how much RAM memory i have (how to i find this out).
My computer has just recently started running very slow and is locking
up quite frequently. in addition, when i scroll down, the computer
keeps scrolling. a friend of mine told me there is a way to shut off
the "automatic scroll feature" how do I do this as well.

You don't need to defrag journalized file systems. This is default in Ubuntu. You will only need to defrag if you use crappy FAT based filesystems or Ext2.

Ctrl+Alt+T will bring up terminal. Copy and Paste the command below. Then copy and paste whatever is in terminal, back here in message box.

free -m

copy and paste are not highlighted, therefore, cannot do this.

it says...
laptop@laptop-laptop~$ (then there is a square after the $)
