Firefox spelling language not remembered

Asked by Mitch Claborn

Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit
firefox 12.0+build1-0ubuntu0.12.04.1

The language for spell checking on text area inputs is not saved across restarts of FireFox. The default for me always comes up as English / Australia. I have to change it to English / United States.

(To see this, right click when cursor is in a text area input and choose the Languages sub menu.)

Is this a bug or ??

Hi Mitch,

your question sounds me like that you have wrong configuration on your Ubuntu operating system. If I am correct firefox uses default system lanuage settings on each start up. So please, check if you have proper configured on your system settings by going to your System settings > Language support. Then in a pop-up which will display choose proper settings that suits you.

If that helps you solve your question, please mark thread as solved.

Regards,
Miha

Weird. When I first checked my Language settings, "English (United States)" was already at the top of the list. I rebooted just to make sure I was starting clean and "English (United States)" is still at the top of the list, but now FireFox is also showing "English / United States".

For sake of understanding, changed my system Language to "English (Australia)" and Firefox did not follow it, even after a reboot.

There is something weird here, but I can't come up with a reproducible scenario.

I wonder if this is the FireFox "spellcheck.dictionary" setting from about:config? It shows en_US now as being "user set". That also appears to be the default setting.

I'll watch that setting the next time I discover that it is not as it should be.

Could a FireFox update somehow reset that?

Maybe try tools - addons - languages and disable US.
