secure online banking

Asked by Martin MacDonald

When trying to pay for a film on the You-Tube site, the 'payment-section' does NOT come up/show as secure! Is there any software that I can download for Linux, to make any site totally secure if I need to make payments over it? i.e. Something like & similar to, the 'Trusteer Rapport' that is made/used for Windows.

Try Chromium, I imagine there is a padlock at the bottom of the page...

Thanks for your speedy reply, but it's not a padlock that I need (I've got one of those now, that I added to my Firefox from the Firefox add-ons site) I was wondering if there was a 'programme' like the 'Trusteer Rapport' http://www.trusteer.com/presentation-how-it-works that's made for Windows, that you can use with Linux? I've been all over the net searching, but can't find anything like it.

Does Chromium not show the security? Why do you need an addon?? There is SSL security already in browsers by default. There is no need to install extra fluff like this...

Oh, I'm not that technical to be honest. So do you mean that even when my 'Firefox-Padlock' has a red exclamation mark on it, the YouTube 'payment-section' IS in fact totally secure? I've messaged You-Tube about it, but haven't had a reply yet. I've a feeling that I'm searching for 'Software' that doesn't exist to be honest. I had the same problem with the Blink-Box film site, when you go to the payment-section it comes up as UN-secure according to the padlock etc. Or IS it totally secure if it has the https & not just http? Is THAT the SSL security you mean? sorry to be a pain....lol

I can send a 'screen-shot' of my desktop-page if you want, to your email-address, then you can see for yourself exactly what I mean........

Look at the SIB for verification purposes.

However you need to trust third parties e.g. issuer of certificates, addons; noscript, showip, cookie manager may help.
Some strongly recommend livecd for online banking, I'd say brain 1.0 should be sufficient.

Yes, the SIB that you're referring to (I've looked at the link you supplied) comes up on YouTube as UN-secure, when you go to make a payment! Not very good of YouTube is it, to have an UN-secure payment-section. Never mind, I'll just have to stick to secure sites & give sites such as You-Tube a wide berth. It's a shame that 'Trusteer-Rapport' is not made for Linux operating systems, as the way that works, is that you can go to any site & activate the 'Trusteer-Rapport' & it makes the site totally secure within seconds. My bank Santander recommend it to all their customers, but I can't have it as it's not made for Linux. Anyway, thanks for all your help everybody.

I have been using payment gateways (PayPal and Stripe) for online banking for a few years and have never had any security issues. I feel that it is 100% as safe as a normal bank, if not safer. Big online banks are going to have the funds to spend lots on security and protecting their customers online. As long as you are careful and don't give out any information you'll be fine.
