Ubuntu and Firefox take several minutes to do anything

Asked by Randy Stegemann

This operating system is ponderously slow. Firefox takes several minutes to load a page, gives several messages about stopped scripts on the page, hangs and won't play videos or YouTube.

sudo lshw -C display; lsb_release -a; uname -a; free -m; df -h

Thanks

Its prbably slow due to poor config.

I'm absolutely sure I have it configured wrong, I have no experience with Linux.

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with Firefox 10.0.2. This is the only version I could find that runs on my computer, in spite of it not having an SMB controller.

I have a Dell Optiplex G1, 400 MHz Pentium 2, 192 MB RAM, 20 GB hard drive for Ubuntu.

Forgive my inexperience with Linux, but I don't know how to get the requested output info.

Please help. Thanks.

With 192Mb RAM, I suggest you install LXDE and use that, the minimum for Gnome. LXDE is a lighter desktop and much more suited to your hardware.

your computer is outrageously slow compared to today's standards. with all the garbage that people put onto their websites, especially google with all their tracking shit, it's no wonder loading webpages is slow.

as actionparsnip said, you'll need to install lxde. seeing that your machine is only 400 mHz, it will still be slow.

Can you help with this problem?
