how to add a weblink on desktop

Asked by Mike Lee

Is there a program that I can use as a link on my desktop so I can say for example http://www.google.com/sky/ so when I click on it I go straight to that webpage?

I am sure there used to be on previous version of ubuntu pre-11.10.

TIA,

Mike.

Ok run:

gedit ~/Desktop/Sky.desktop

add the below text:

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Google Sky
Icon=firefox
Type=Application
Categories=Network;WebBrowser;
Exec=firefox http://www.google.com/sky/
StartupNotify=True
Terminal=false

Save the new file, close gedit and you will now have a shortcut. Why did I have to ask twice what browser you used?

Chromium has a much easier way to achieve this.

Yes sorry I missed the first question about the browser, and thank you
for the answer to my first question.
Yes well Firefox has always been my best browser but having said that
Chrome is a good one to and I am starting to use Chrome more and more
these days not that Firefox is any thing bad.
But as you say if Chrome is easier to use for that then I may well use
that more than Firefox.

Thank you for help.

Mike.

I think firefox is a poor browser, but thats my opinion.

Now that was nice and easy, yes Chrome is better than Firefox in that
respect and in fact others to, I can do more with Chrome than I can with
Firefox, you know some thing here, you have convinced me to convert over
to Chrome rather than Firefox.

I like nice and easy.......
