Ubuntu 11.10 locks up

Asked by Neal Pritchard

Ubuntu locks up while my internet browser is open. It happens with Firefox and Chrome. It only seems to happen when I'm on line. Also, what is the best coarse of action when a Linux system locks up? There is no task manager like a Windows OS to close un- responding app's. I wind up powering my system off to get it running again.

There is a task manager, it's called 'System Monitor'. Click on the 'processes tab'.

The correct way to reboot or shutdown an unresponsive Linux system is with the <SysRq> key. Press and hold the <alt> and <SysRq> key (on the <PrintScreen> key on most keyboards) and the press each of the following keys with a pause of a second or two inbetween:

r e i s u b

This can be remembered with the phrase "Reboot Even If System Utterly Broken".

You can shut the system down with the same sequence simply by changing the last key press from (b)oot to (o)ff.

As far as the browsers locking up, it may be a problem with flash or java. Try Googling for anyone having similar problems, and try to work out whether it might be flash that is causing the problem. If this is the case I can recommend using the Firefox plugin Flashaid to sort out flash problems and install the correct versions of flash for your installation.
