Adobe Flash plugin constantly crashing

Asked by CR Stewart

I run Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with Mozilla Firefox. Upon booting up this morning and running the Update Manager I found an upgrade of Firefox (from my present 9.0.1 to 10.0) was available, so I ran the updates and went about my business. Immediately I found my Adobe Flash plugin was crashing consistently everywhere I went. I checked top make sure I had the most recent version and I do - 11.1.103.55 - so I called Adobe Customer Support but they told me to come here for help. I HAVE tried to downgrade back to the earlier version of Firefox but it appears not to be possible. SO, how do I solve my problem? I am NOT a programmer or developer, I am simply a 62 yr old computer User with limited knowledge and experience. If you give me really technical responses I may not know what to do with them, especially seeing as how I am using Ubuntu. Can You Help Me??? Richard...

Can you give the output of:

lsb_release -a; uname -a; dpkg -l | egrep 'flash|gnash|swf|spark'

What does being a developer orprogrammer have to do with anthing?

I don't know what the heck you are asking of me, that's why I said I'm not a programmer. Your response only leaves me scratching my head wondering how I am to find the answer to what you've asked of me! Maybe I've asked my question in the wrong forum??

Yes, you have lots of flash plugins installed. This causes a conflict and you get issues.

This big command will fix you up.

sudo apt-get --purge remove adobe-flash-properties-gtk adobe-flashplugin libswfdec-0.8-0 swfdec-gnome; sudo dpkg -P flashplugin-installer; sudo apt-get --purge autoremove; sudo apt-get install adobe-flashplugin

You now ONLY have the adobe plugin installed. Restart your browser to load the single plugin and you'll be ok

Followed your instructions to the "T" and the problem still exists. Have no time to deal with this for at LEAST another 24 - 36 hours, but I must solve it somehow so I'll be back. If another potential solution presents itself please e-mail me at <email address hidden> -- Thanks a lot!!! Richard...

Can you give the output of:

lsb_release -a; uname -a; dpkg -l | egrep 'flash|gnash|swf|spark'

So we can see the new plugin status.

Thanks

Just a quick side-note, I also have posed my question on the Ubuntu Forums and the only response was to try to download the addon "Flash-aid". I did try that both yesterday and again today but it doesn't download and gives the message "...could not be downloaded because of a connection failure on addon.mozilla.org" . I'm wide open to any other suggestions. I'll be home for about another hour but won't be able to get back to this til Sunday afternoon Eastern time. If you have further ideas just please be as specific as you can in how I am to follow them and I will follow verbatim! Many thanks for at least trying to help me!!! Richard...

sudo apt-get --purge remove adobe-flashplugin
sudo dpkg -P flashplugin-installer
sudo dpkg -P gnash-common
sudo apt-get --purge remove libswfdec-0.8-0
sudo dpkg -P swfdec-gnome
sudo apt-get --purge remove swfdec-mozilla

Then you will have no flash, then does:

dpkg -l | egrep 'flash|gnash|swf|spark'

output nothing?

If so, run:

sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer

If it outputs something then paste the text here bu t don't install flashplugin-installer

You still have a lot of flash plugins which will cause problems.

Hello,

My name is Jim and I am 68 years old with not very much understanding of what to do to resolve Linux problems other than going to my applications and use the ubuntu software center to download newer versions. I had a working adobe flash player plug-in. I removed the old one then added the new one. After completing the download it said it was done sucessfully. When I restarted the computer, any program needing flash player brought up a crash message. I removed the flash player and reloaded again. Same thing. I now start to download it and all the parts are not able to download and I get the following message:

Could not download all repository indexes

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu/wine/ubuntu/dists/lucid/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

I don't have the slightest idea what that means but I could have deleted some essential file using the computer janitor. I am trying to learn this system and I think that I am my worst enemy!

Can someone give me some help in simple non-tech language so I can get the Adobe flash player to work again so I can use you-tube and open email attachments calling for it. My movie player works along with Adobe Reader. My system has really bogged down and my screen often dims before I can do a number of activities on my computer. Is that related to my problem, too?

If I have to type in commands like you have told others to do, where to I type those commands? That's how non-tech I am. It's going to take a super star out there to help me!!!

Thanks so much.

Jim

THAT IS MY QUESTION. HOW CAN I GET ADOBE FLASH-PLAYER TO WORK WHEN EVERY TIME I DOWNLOAD IT I GET THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE:

Could not download all repository indexes

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu/wine/ubuntu/dists/lucid/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
