firefox stopped working

Asked by ted nugent

I am a major computer dork (one that knows next to nothing about them). I was using the internet on my Linux box (installed by a computer knowledgable buddy) when all of a sudden the search box in the upper right hand corner of the screen disappears. So I end up on a google search update page where I select "toolbar" and the little box is still gone. Then I close google and hit the firefox icon to restart and ... nobody home! I have been thrashing all day (O.K. almost 2 hours) trying to get firefox to work with no luck. I am also stumped regularly by computer terms that I don't know how to use i.e. "dns", "proxy", etc.
I need help!
Ted

So the search bar in firefox is missing? Is that the issue here?

I had a similar problem got help from "lovinglinux
Add-on Developer" who is Brazil based he asked me to try this from terminal $firefox -safe-mode followed by $firefox -P.I suspected a virus installed Clamav after which Firefox became active but that was temporary.I then tried out what "Loving Linux" had suggested to get the problem sorted out for good. After you think it helped a word of thanks to Loving Linux would be appropriate

I did try safe mode via the "terminal" but it said "no file exists". What did LL suggest that worked for you?

What is going on is I click on the firefox icon in the tool panel and I get the hourglass thing, it shows a tab on the bottom that says, "launching firefox web browser". this goes on for about 15 seconds then nothing happens, the tab disappears and we're back to where we started.

ok, launch firefox from a terminal. What happens? You can launch one by typing:

firefox

and pressing ENTER.

thanks for the guidance: when I put "firefox" in the terminal the response is,"Segmentation fault (core dumped)". Is this a good indication of what's happening??

Try:

mv ~/.mozilla/firefox ~/.mozilla/firefox_old

Then rerun

tried that and got, "mv: missing destination file operand after '/home/ted/.mozilla/firefox~/.mozilla/firefox_old' Try 'mv --help' for more information"

when I typed "mv --help" there seemed to be a lot of good info. the problem for me is I don't know what the $^#$ it means! seems to be a lot of talk about 'backups'. Could this be the prob.? I should mention, I did attempt to uninstall firefox via "synaptic manager" and then reinstall via "add/delete programs" but to no avail.

would it be helpful to post all the 'help' stuff that came up?

You mangled the command, look at what you ran then look at what I advised...

O.K. reran the command- tried it two ways one with a space after mv and again w/out. the responses were: "missing destination file"(with) and "no such file or directory (w/out space)
??

If you open your home folder and press CTRL+H and double click the .mozilla folder you will then see a firefox folder, rename it

can't find .mozilla in the home folder- the only thing I found was when I opened up "desktop" it has "firefox web browser" and when I hit ctrl h the screen squirmed like a lobster.

hey actionparsnip-
do you have any idea what the problem with my computer is? since no one else is offering suggestions, I'd be glad to pursue this thing via google (on my laptop) if you could offer a possible scenario. Thank you.

Your profile may be causing the issue, worth renaming to see if a vanilla profile makes it ok. Can you give the output of:

apt-cache policy firefox

Thanks

Gutsy is no longer supported in any way. I suggest you clean install Oneiric

Download the ISO, MD5 test it and burn SLOWLY to a CD or use usb-creator to make a live USB. You can then boot to it and tell the installer to use all the available space for the install (I assume you do NOT dual boot). Make sure your backups are up to date as the new install will destroy ALL data.

O.K.
I dont have anything backed up. This sounds a little severe. Where do you thing my internet access went and isn't there a way to get it back?

Why do you not have a backup!!? What if your drive motor dies, where is your data??

I guess the same reason I am in this fix in the first place- I don't use the computer much. It seems like firefox disappeared so quickly that I should be able to get it back fairly easily- perhaps a bit naive. do you have any idea what happened?? It seems like we hit about once every 1/2 hour and I really appreciate your advice (the only advice I have received) but maybe if you could explain what you think happened, I could research it via google and be a bit more pro-active.
It must be frustrating for you as well when I disappear to cook dinner and you don't hear back from me

After seeing all that transpired between Ted and actionparsnip I think Ted's Firefox has deserted him once and for all. With Gutsy out of the scene fresh install of Oneric offers the best option for Ted.
