11.04 Install Firefox needs JRE

Asked by Charles Harris

Hi

Thanks guys for help so far. Anotherset of questions.

Have 11.04 running from CD. Looks very good.

When I try to open Firefox it asks for a JVR Java Runtime Environment. Where do I download the file from ? I will have to download using Win7, so where do I put it fro 11.04 to find ?

I have looked at the process for finding the wireless router with no success yet. Should the 11.04 set up automatically ?

Thanks

Charlie Harris

The command Andrew gave needs to be typed into a terminal window. Bash commands are often given in support forum because they can just be cut from the browser and pasted into a terminal window with the middle mouse button. In this case though you might want to find a bash tutorial and read up on it; if you're going to maintain a system offline they you're either going to have to get very friendly with bash or learn how to make a personal PPA (Personal Package Archive) on CD.

You should be able to open Firefox, it's just sites that use Java might require java and javaws. For this you should install the open source versions openjdk and icedtea. Come to think of it, you must be using Firefox to look at local HTML source? If you were looking at a site on the WWW, then why wouldn't you just use the Software Center in Ubuntu to do the install for you?

Also, you're going to get awfully sick of installing openjdk every time you boot the computer from CD... or were you just going to leave it turned on forever?

The files can be found on all mirrors, under the following path. Just change the URL to your favourite mirror, or just use this one as it is: (My favourite, since it is the fastest here in OZ)

http://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/ubuntu/archive/pool/universe/o/openjdk-7/

You will also have to download and install the dependencies and other required components.

Required:
==============
ca-certificates-java
icedtea-7-jre-jamvm
java-common
libaccess-bridge-java
libaccess-bridge-java-jni
libgif4
libnss3-1d
openjdk-7-jre
openjdk-7-jre-headless
openjdk-7-jre-lib
ttf-dejavu-extra
tzdata-java
==============

If you can't find the exact package name you will need to search in the index.
The exact versions that you need to get might depend on the release (11.04) which is why Andrew was asking for more information, but I think the latest versions of all these would be correct.
